What is dates powder?
Dates powder is dried dates — usually Arabian kharek, the hard dry variety rather than soft khajur — ground into a fine powder. A spoon stirred into milk, porridge or kheer sweetens it naturally.
It is a traditional sweetener in Indian homes, used long before white sugar reached the kitchen, and remains a common way to add natural sweetness to food for young children without refined sugar.
Why parents choose it
Iron and minerals. Dates are among the more mineral-dense dried fruits, contributing iron and potassium.
Natural sweetness instead of refined sugar. Indian and international dietary guidance advises against added sugar for children under one year. Dates powder is a way to add sweetness without it.
Energy density. Dates are calorie-dense relative to their volume, which is why they feature in traditional Indian weaning foods where portions are small.
Dietary fibre. Dates are a source of dietary fibre, part of why they have long been used as an early food in Indian households.
How to use it
Half to one teaspoon stirred into warm milk, porridge, kheer or halwa. Add it after cooking rather than before.
Introduce it on its own first and watch, as with any new food. Most babies take to it immediately, because it tastes good.

Dry dates or soft dates?
Both are dates, but they behave differently. Soft khajur holds too much moisture to grind into a shelf-stable powder without additives. Dry dates — kharek — grind clean and keep well without preservatives. That's why dates powder is made from the dry variety.

Frequently asked questions
From what age can babies have dates powder?
Commonly introduced from around six months, once solids have started and a few single foods are established. Introduce it on its own first, and check with your paediatrician about your own baby.
How much per day?
Half to one teaspoon is plenty for a baby. It is a sweetener and a small addition, not a meal.
Why does dates powder appear in traditional weaning foods?
It is energy-dense and naturally sweet, which is why Indian households have long used it alongside foods such as sathu maavu and banana powder — see our traditional weaning foods. For advice on your child's growth, please speak to your paediatrician.
Can I add it to a milk bottle?
Better stirred into food than into a bottle — it can clog a teat.
How should I store it?
Airtight and away from moisture. No refrigeration needed.
