Sprouted Ragi Porridge for Babies: When & How to Start

When Can Babies Start Sprouted Ragi Porridge?

Sprouted ragi (finger millet) porridge can be introduced from around 6 months of age, once your baby is ready for complementary foods and continues breastfeeding or formula feeding.

Look for these signs of readiness:

  • Sits with minimal support
  • Has good head and neck control
  • Shows interest in food
  • Can swallow soft foods instead of pushing them out with the tongue

Why Choose Sprouted Ragi?

Sprouting helps:

  • Improve digestibility
  • Reduce some naturally occurring compounds that can limit mineral absorption
  • Enhance the availability of certain nutrients
  • Produce a smoother porridge that's easier for babies to digest

Sprouted ragi is a good source of:

  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Dietary fiber
  • Complex carbohydrates
  • Plant protein

How to Start

Week 1

  • Offer 1–2 teaspoons once a day.
  • Make it thin and smooth.

Week 2

  • Increase gradually to 2–4 tablespoons, depending on your baby's appetite.

After 7–8 months

  • Serve a slightly thicker consistency.
  • Increase the quantity as tolerated.

How to Prepare

  1. Mix 1 tablespoon sprouted ragi powder with a little water to make a lump-free paste.
  2. Add about 100–120 ml water.
  3. Cook on low heat for 5–7 minutes, stirring continuously.
  4. Cool until warm before feeding.

For babies under 1 year, avoid adding:

  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Honey

You may mix in small amounts of:

  • Mashed banana
  • Apple puree
  • Pear puree
  • Dates puree (after cooking)
  • Breast milk or formula (after the porridge has cooled slightly)

How Often?

  • 6–8 months: 2–3 times per week
  • 8–12 months: 3–5 times per week as part of a varied diet

Tips

  • Always prepare fresh porridge.
  • Start with a smooth consistency and thicken gradually as your baby develops chewing skills.
  • Introduce only one new food at a time and watch for any reactions over the next 2–3 days.
  • Pair ragi meals with a vitamin C-rich fruit later in the day (such as orange, kiwi, or guava for older babies) to help improve iron absorption.

Sprouted ragi porridge is a wholesome first food that provides sustained energy and important nutrients, making it an excellent addition to a baby's complementary feeding journey from 6 months onward.
